Casting Brief
Sheffield Theatres are seeking exceptional young local performers for two roles in their production of Chris Bush and Richard Hawley’s musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge, directed by Robert Hastie.
Constance, daughter of Liberian refugee Joy, is aged 10 in 2002.
Dual Heritage Female with a playing age of 10 - 12 years
(Auditionees must be 9 years old or above at time of audition)
James, son of Rose and Harry, is aged 8 in the mid/late 1960’s.
White British Male, playing age of 8
(Auditionees must be 9 years old or above at time of audition)
We are looking for strong actors with who can sing, have good movement skills and the ability to confidently handle dialogue in a Sheffield accent.
Three performers will be cast for each role, and they will perform on a rotational basis.
Audition Details
Date: Thursday 29 September 2022
Registration: 4.00pm
Audition duration: 4.30pm – 6.30pm
Location: Crucible Theatre, 55 Norfolk Street, Sheffield, S1 1DA
Please arrive at Crucible Theatre Box Office for registration from 4.00pm.
Auditionees are asked to pre-register by emailing the name of a parent/guardian, the child’s name, date of birth and any access requirements to auditions@sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.

Full registration details and contact numbers will be taken on the day.
The audition will be a group session where participants will be expected to work on a script extract provided on the day. All attendees will also be required to move at the audition, and should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water. All auditionees must be dropped off and collected by a parent or guardian.
The closing date for audition entries is 6.00pm on Wednesday 28 September 2022.
Commitment
Successful performers must be free and committed to attending the following times and dates:
- The audition on Thursday 29 September 2022.
- Rehearsals from Monday 14 November to Saturday 3 December 2022 at both the Lyceum and Crucible Theatres in Sheffield. It is envisaged that there will be 2-3 rehearsal sessions a week; however, a more detailed schedule will be available at the time of casting. During the final week of rehearsals this will increase to 4-5 sessions over the week.
- Technical Rehearsals, performances, and occasional rehearsals at the Crucible Theatre from Monday 5 December 2022 to Saturday 21 January 2022.
There will be full chaperone support throughout the rehearsal and performance period. Time off school will be required for certain rehearsals and matinee performances. Sheffield Theatres will apply for a local authority performance licence for rehearsal and performance, the application process will be explained after casting.
- The roles will be performed on a rotational basis between the 3 successful performers cast in each role. Sheffield Theatres reserves the right to choose which performances the successful performers will appear in. A schedule of performances is available on the What’s On page of the Sheffield Theatres’ website.
- All successful performers must live within a reasonable 45-minute journey to the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield where all performances will take place.
