We today announce Robert Hastie’s final season as he steps down after eight years as Artistic Director, with new productions running from summer 2024 to spring 2025 in the Crucible Theatre and Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse.
CRUCIBLE
- Artistic director Robert Hastie will direct a new production of Chariots of Fire by Mike Bartlett, celebrating the 100th anniversary of record-breaking races at the 1924 Paris Olympics and the true story of two athletes’ support of each other’s beliefs.
- A brand new version of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House is adapted by Chris Bush and directed by Elin Schofield – reuniting after their previous success with ROCK / PAPER / SCISSORS.
- A new Sheffield Theatres production of Little Shop of Horrors, the out of this world rock musical, will be the 2024 winter musical, with book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken.
- In 2025, a new co-production with Utopia Theatre to present Death and the King’s Horseman, by Wole Soyinka and directed byMojisola Kareem.
- Passions ignite and illusions are shattered in Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Josh Seymour

- Sheffield Theatres and Theatre Centre collaborate again presenting Dizzy, a fantastical teenage odyssey of grief, love, unexpected heroes and street art by Mohammed Zain-Dada.
- Western, true crime and music come together in KENREX, from the makers of Olivier-nominated hit Cruise.
- Malorie Blackman’s award-winning book Pig Heart Boy, adapted by Winsome Pinnock, directed by Tristan Finn-Aiduenu, and co-produced with Unicorn Theatre and Children’s Theatre Partnership comes to Sheffield.

Chariots of Fire opens the final season in the Crucible. Adapted by Mike Bartlett from the 1981 film based on the remarkable events of the 1924 Olympics and directed by Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director Robert Hastie, this production marks the 100th anniversary of the true stories of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, and their record-breaking achievements. This festive season, we produce Little Shop of Horrors staged in the Crucible and directed by Amy Hodge (Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World, Henry VIII). This killer rock musical with plenty of bite features the songs Little Shop of Horrors, Suddenly Seymour and Skid Row (Downtown). From Sat 7 Dec 2024 – Sat 18 Jan 2025.
Into the new year, Sheffield Theatres andUtopia Theatrepresent Death And The King’s Horseman,written by Wole Soyinka, and directed by Mojisola Kareem. Set in 1940s Nigeria, a thought-provoking, resonant theatrical experience deeply rooted in the culture and spirituality of the Yoruba people. From Mon 3 – Sat 8 Feb 2025.
In spring 2025,Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Streetcar Named Desire is directed by Josh Seymour. In the sultry back streets of New Orleans, two sisters must choose between fantasy and reality as past truths begin to resurface. From Saturday 1 - Saturday 29 March 2025, with tickets going on sale later in 2024.
In the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse, Sheffield Theatres and Theatre Centre collaborate again after the recent success of Wish You Weren’t Here, presenting Dizzy, a fantastical odyssey of grief, love, unexpected heroes and painting the town red (literally). Written by Mohamed-Zain Dada and directed by Theatre Centre’s Artistic Director Rob Watt. From Wed25 Sep – Sat 12 Oct.
Part Western, part True Crime, with a foot-stomping Americana soundtrack, KENREX is presented by Sheffield Theatres and Aria Entertainment. By Jack Holden and Ed Stambollouian, performed by Jack Holden with music by John Patrick Elliott. From Sat 26 Oct - Sat 16 Nov.
Is it better to have a pig's heart that works, than a human heart that doesn't? Malorie Blackman’s award-winning book Pig Heart Boy, adapted by Winsome Pinnock, is a Sheffield Theatres, Unicorn Theatre and Children’s Theatre Partnership co-production, directed by Tristan Finn-Aiduenu. From Thu 27 Feb – Sat 15 Mar 2025.
The Playhouse is also a co-creating platform for local theatre-makers with three new productions created and performed by communities of Sheffield, through Sheffield People’s Theatre (SPT), the intergenerational company for anyone aged 12+; SPT Young Company, for anyone aged 18 – 25 looking to develop a career in the creative industries; and Launchpad, a group for adults with learning disabilities and/or Autism. Total Ripple Effect, devised by Laura Guthrie and the Launchpad Company with key concepts inspired from Urgent! A Timely Play runs on Friday 7 June. Then Urgent! A Timely Play, by Nicole Joseph in collaboration with SPTYoung Company, runs on Saturday 29 June. Finally, Something Old, Something New runs from Wednesday 14 – Saturday 17 August, performed by Sheffield People’s Theatre, written and directed by Tess Seddon.

Room on the Broom flies into Sheffield from Thursday 23 - Saturday 25 January 2025. Jump on board in Tall Stories’ fun-filled adaptation of the best-selling picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The witch and her cat are travelling on their broomstick when they pick up some hitch-hikers – a friendly dog, a beautiful green bird and a frantic frog. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – it snaps in two... just as the hungry dragon appears! The magical, Olivier Award-nominated show for everyone aged 3 and up.

Thatcher-rite plays on Saturday 8 June 2024. Welcome to Mrs. Thatcher’s very own traditional English tea party. An interactive performance exploring the personal and political legacy of Margaret Thatcher. With lip-sync, clown, and verbatim theatre.
From Monday 10 – Tuesday 11 June is Dead Girls Rising. Katie and Hannah love murder. They go to bed listening to podcasts about serial killers. Silent Uproar’s twisted coming of age story is about our deepest fears and how we seek to control them.
Created by electronic musician, An-Ting, and creative technologist, Ian Gallagher, Lost Communications runs on Friday 21 June. A live audio-AI-visual performance immersing the audience deeply into the light and darkness of nature.

The return of the World Seniors Snooker Championship for 2024 plays from Wednesday 8 – Sunday 12 May. Following on from the professional championships, defending champion Jimmy White will lead a stellar field of the world’s best senior snooker players.
