National Theatre (NT) Connections
is a nationwide celebration of young people from across the UK. As a partner theatre, we will proudly host local youth theatres and school groups performing new plays that have been written specifically for young people across four days, from Friday 5 – Tuesday 9 April.
On Friday 5 April is Shout
by Alexis Zegerman, presented by Notre Dame High School at 7pm. In a world full of words, how can Dana survive when she can't speak? Dana has selective mutism, but that doesn't stop her vivid imagination. Following is The Periodicals by Siân Owen, presented by Chaucer School at 8:15pm. Set in the near future - a group of young people live as a feral group of techno-savvy fugitives, living off-the land which is a rubbish dump.
On Saturday 6 April, Kiss / Marry / Push Off Cliff
by Josh Azouz is presented by Yew Tree Theatre at 7pm. A group of friends go camping – but after only one night, one of them is ostracised by the rest of the group and cast out into wilderness for something they said… or was it something they did…?
On Monday 8 April, Orchestra by Charlie Josephine is presented by Penistone Grammar School at 7pm. A youth orchestra practises during half term holidays in preparation for a concert, but unexpected events cause the members to interrogate their relationship with success. Following is Age Is Revolting by Abi Zakarian, presented by CAST at 8.15pm. When a group of school kids rebel against their boring music lesson they hit the wrong note and magically transform into their 80 year-old selves…and now live in a care home.
The final performance on Tuesday 9 April is Shout, this time presented by North Lindsey College at 7pm.
Now in its 29th year, the NT Connections Festival champions the talent of young people across the country. Ten plays are commissioned by National Theatre Connections every year for young people to perform, exploring a range of themes including neurodiversity, cancel culture and mental health. Young people also have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of the theatre making process both on and off stage, including costume, lighting and set design, and learn about the many skills and roles involved in theatre.
