We are delighted to announce the members of the New Dramaturgs Group: a cohort of five early-career artists that will work alongside Sheffield Theatres to develop their dramaturgical skills and experiences.
The New Dramaturgs Group are: Grace Waga Glevey, Fadumo Hassan, Tadhg Kwasi, Erin Marsh and Ashlea Screaton.
Grace Waga Glevey is a theatre maker interested in exploring dual heritage identity and class. Fadumo Hassan began her career as a screen actor and later transitioned to theatre, exploring comedy, drama, Black history, and the supernatural. Tadhg Kwasi is an Irish-Ghanaian published poet, fiction writer and budding script writer. Erin Marsh is a writer, theatre maker, and games designer who creates immersive experiences. Ashlea Screaton is a Yorkshire born and based creative, tutor and fantasy fiction writer.
The New Dramaturgs Group, led by Grace Gummer (Playwright Mentor at Sheffield Theatres), will undertake skills workshops, collaborate on a residency programme, read and report on scripts, and dramaturg a Sheffield Theatres project.
Tommi Bryson, Talent Development Coordinator at Sheffield Theatres, said:
"We're very excited to be announcing our New Dramaturgs Group. Projects that enable and empower early-career creatives are vital to our industry's ecology, and opportunities to develop entry-level dramaturgical skills in working environments are practically non-existent. This project not only addresses these needs, but also creates a space for a wonderful group of early-career creatives to connect with each other, with Sheffield Theatres, and with the wider creative community in Sheffield - all while gaining professional experience across a range of projects."
Grace Gummer, Playwright Mentor at Sheffield Theatres, added:
“For me, dramaturgy is simply how a play works. If you can describe exactly why your favourite song is so good, what it does to hit so hard, then you're close.
Giving people the skills and the confidence to practice dramaturgy will mean they can then go on to collaborate with other theatre-makers in the future. They will support the creation of exciting new work in and by Sheffield.”
The New Dramaturgs Group is made possible by the generous support of Barbara Crossley.
Sheffield Theatres would like to thank The Dramaturgs Network for their support and expertise in the conception of this project. You can learn more about their work dramaturgy.co.uk/about-us.
