We are delighted to share the news that Bookey Oshin, our Deputy CEO, is one of five highly respected business people and community leaders to be named as Deputy Lieutenants of the County of South Yorkshire.
The role of a Deputy Lieutenant involves supporting and deputising for His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Prof. Dame Hilary Chapman. Duties may include attending Royal visits to the county, representing the Lieutenancy at ceremonial events such as Remembrance Day and citizenship ceremonies and any other duties that the Lord-Lieutenant may ask to be undertaken on her behalf. Appointment to this position is by the Lord-Lieutenant, subject only to The King not disapproving of the granting of their commission.
In addition to being part of the leadership team at Sheffield Theatres, Bookey is passionate about giving back to her adopted city since emigrating to UK from Nigeria in 1987. She is on the Board of Whirlow Hall Farm, an organisation that is involved in providing alternative education to children in inner city schools in an outdoor and farming environment. This is particularly important for children who do not thrive under mainstream education and are at risk of being excluded. She is also a trustee of Utopia Theatre, a young theatre company in Sheffield formed to celebrate the elements of African culture. Bookey is a Guardian of the Sheffield Assay office and was also on the board of South Yorkshire Housing Association for a number of years.
Bookey Oshin said; “I am highly honoured to have been selected for this prestigious role. I am excited and look forward to supporting Prof, Dame Hilary Chapman in serving the community.”
HM Lord-Lieutenant, Prof Dame Hilary Chapman said: “I am delighted to have been able to select such a diverse group of people to become Deputy Lieutenants. These people are already outstanding servants of South Yorkshire. In their different fields they have contributed to making life better for the rest of us and, as Deputy Lieutenants, will continue to do so.”
