In the latest instalment of his Beethoven cycle Tim Horton performs one of the best-known of all piano sonatas, the Moonlight, and the less famous but equally original Op.27 No.1, the Moonlight’s sister piece.
The Sonata À Thérèse juxtaposes a glowing first movement with one of his wittiest creations in his second movement, in which dynamics and register are greatly contrasted. The first movement of Op.54 has been likened by Alfred Brendel to the story of Beauty and the Beast; the first theme is a charming minuet which gradually tames the aggressive and lumpen second theme.
